How To Overcome The Car Engine Failure

What to do in the event of an engine failure? Cheap value than a new engine is engine repair. That's how the procedure works and that's how expensive it gets! Everything goes according to plan, an internal combustion engine lasts at least 250,000 kilometers or 15 to 20 years without major incidents. Unfortunately, however, this is not always the case. If the engine hits ahead, however, this does not immediately mean the total damage of the vehicle. In some cases, a repair of the engine will remedy the situation.

What Is Engine Repair

When repaired, the engine is repaired and its functionality restored. This can only affect individual parts or also mean the major overhaul of the entire unit. During the major overhaul, the entire engine is then completely dismantled and then completely rebuilt.

Reasons For Engine Failure

In an internal combustion engine there are several parts that rotate (crankshaft, camshaft and turbocharger), stomp (pistons in the cylinder and valves in the cylinder head) or flow through (cooling and oil cycle). Whether production fluctuations, material fatigue, poor care, a faulty cylinder head seal, the ruptured tooth strap, or a turbocharger damage – all this can cause engine failure and subsequently make engine repair necessary.

First Port of Doing After Engine Failure

If the engine failure has not been diagnosed in the workshop, the question may be how the vehicle gets there for repair. A crack of the control chain or the tooth belt or fixed pistons make a trip to the workshop on your own axis impossible. However, even if the engine can still be started, car owners should take appropriate warnings from the on-board diagnostic system seriously: Notifications such as  "oil pressure too low, You can do to turn off the engine " and you must not be ignored at all. For example, a warning can occur after turbocharger damage.

The loader may no longer be saved and the engine still runs with reduced power. However, – apart from the risk of lack of oil supply – broken parts of the turbocharger can enter the combustion chamber, where they can lead to further serious damage. Even with clearly noticeable noises (grinding, loud clacking or grinding) from the engine applies: Park the car immediately and consult the workshop or a tow service. In most cases, engine repair takes place in another workshop. After the expansion of the engine, it is delivered by the in-house workshop to a specialist, who mainly takes care of the repair of engines.

New Engine, Replacement Engine or Engine Repair

If the owner is unable to enforce any warranty claims after the manufacturer has found engine damage, he will rarely opt for a brand new engine. This is due to the very high price that manufacturers are calling for a new aggregate. Much cheaper is a generally overhauled engine, in which not only all defective components, but also a number of wear parts (seals, belt shoots) are replaced for new or correspondingly revised parts as a precaution. Engine repair does not have to be carried out on the engine. In many cases, specialized companies already have repaired replacement motors that are identical to their own defective engine.

Therefore, if the vehicle does not matter  "matching Numbers ," i.e. the coherent affiliation of the engine number to the chassis number, there is nothing against a neatly repaired replacement engine. On the contrary, the time of repair can be drastically reduced. Thorough repair of an engine can take well over a week, while the design and installation of an engine usually takes little more than two working days.

Engine Repair: Cost

An exchange engine as a fuselage engine typically costs between 2,000 and 6,000 euros for a commercially available four-cylinder engine. Light machine (generator), starter and many other units are taken over by the old engine, as far as this still makes sense. The working time of the workshop, which costs between 65 and more than 100 euros per hour, depending on the location and brand, is not included. The engine installation and re-installation as well as the conversion of the ancillary units and the completion of all adjustment work requires at least one more working day. Means: Again a strict sum for working time. Compared to an replacement engine, the repair costs of a generally overhauled engine according to RAL-GZ 797 are about 20-40 percent lower than those of an AT engine.

Quality Standards For Engine Repair

The steps that lead to a generally overhauled engine are not uniformly regulated. Therefore, in principle, anyone can call an engine completely obsolete, even if the amount of repair completed was very small. In principle, in the case of a generally overhauled engine, it can be assumed that the engine has been completely dismantled and reassembled. However, some standards also set specific requirements for the quality of the work to be carried out. One such standard is the RAL quality mark engine repair (RAL-GZ 797) from the quality community of engine repair companies (GMI). Only member companies of this quality community are allowed to provide their referred engines with the RAL quality mark.

By the way, the quality mark applies to all internal combustion engines, i.e. not only car and truck engines, but also ship diesel, construction, forestry, agricultural and rail machinery. The quality assurance dictates precisely which technical and personnel prerequisites must be met. In addition, the components to be revised and renewed, the assembly, the test purchase and the final inspection of the refurbented engine are precisely defined. Many companies that carry out engine repair under the Directive (RAL-GZ 797) award a guarantee of 24 months.

Engine Repair Process

Engine repair begins with the dismantling and cleaning of the engine parts. All components are inspected and the consumables are sorted out. Then it goes to the test of the cylinder block. The smallest deviations in the target value are sufficient, for example, to induce the grinding and honing of the cylinders according to the manufacturer's specifications. The cylinder head is examined for cracks and delay. If it is error-free, it is fine-made and used for repair. Valves, valve seats and valve guides are always being renewed.

Other components, such as storage jacks, will be inspected and replaced as needed. High-tech is used in crankshaft check. Using electromagnetic crack testing, the shaft is assessed, if necessary re hardened and the storage cones polished. The crankshaft is reused at the end to ensure a clean turn. Pillager and screws are generally replaced. The camshaft will also be renewed if necessary. In addition, the oil channels are meticulously cleaned so that a permanent oil supply is guaranteed after the reunification.

The overhauled engines – whether they are complete engines with all auxiliary units or fuselage motors, are not new after the treatment. But they were dismantled, audited, professionally worked up and reassembled according to exact criteria. All wear parts are replaced by top quality neutral parts that correspond to the state of plant delivery.

All auxiliary units such as pumps and coolers, the ignition system, as well as any existing turbochargers will also be examined. If they are frail, they will be repaired or replaced. The engines overhauled by a GMI member can be seen on stickers and embossing that are attached to the individual components. The overhauled and reassembled engine will end up being tested on an engine test stand to ensure that power and exhaust emissions are at least the same as the series.

Basic Engine Repair

There is another possibility of engine revision. In the case of basic engine repair, the customer usually discusses what needs to be replaced, what can still be used and how spare parts may save one or the other euro, as it does not always have to be original equipment quality. Here, the cost-effectiveness is at the forefront of original fidelity, which does not have to be bad. The resulting works may be similar to that of an overhauled engine. And with this method, you can usually save a few hundred euros. But the engine still owns a large part of the old parts, a guarantee for the next two years without mileage restriction is usually not available.
